Last year was an interesting one. While most people were busy mastering sourdough or tackling the 1,000-piece puzzles of life, I threw myself headfirst into gaining another therapy qualification. (Why tackle one life's purpose when you can juggle two, right?) Don’t get me wrong; it was a fulfilling, rewarding journey—the kind that stretches you in every direction and leaves you with a Diploma in Health Coaching, new connections and friendships both here in the UK and South Africa. But here’s the catch: amidst all that professional development, I realized I had sidelined one crucial part of myself. My art.
You see, the creative process isn’t just something I do. It’s where I breathe. Without it, I felt…off-kilter. Out of sync. Like trying to ride a unicycle on a cobblestone street—possible, but not pretty.
It hit me in quiet, unremarkable moments. A messy corner of my studio. A stack of unused canvases glaring at me like, “Hey, remember us?” Or even during tutorials sessions, where I’d catch myself doodling in the margins of my notes.
So, this year, I’ve made a commitment to my art. Not as a hobby. Not as something to squeeze in between client calls or after folding the laundry, or dusting the cobwebs. But as a priority—because when I’m not creating, I’m not me. And honestly, the world’s chaotic enough without me walking around unbalanced.
What does this commitment look like? I've embarked on a six month immersive art course, to help me focus and kick start me into more paint-splattered days, for starters. Time spent experimenting with colors, textures, and ideas I’ve stored away for far too long. It’s about embracing the messy joy of creation—whether it’s a masterpiece or something only my I would proudly display.
There’s also a touch of humor in all of this. The fact that I’m writing this blog post, for example, instead of painting…classic procrastination disguised as productivity. But hey, baby steps. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from both art and therapy, it’s that balance doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up, letting go of judgment, and finding joy in the process.
I will try to be better at remembering to video and photgraph my new pieces, as I work and share my studio progress. If you would like to follow me then do so here, join my mailing list, on my home. And if you want to pop into my studio and see what I'm doing and view completed work then get in touch and lets make it happen, you'd be very welcome.
So, here’s to 2025—a year of rediscovering my artistic balance and unapologetically splashing color back into my world. If you’re on a similar journey, let’s cheer each other on. And if you’re curious about what I’m creating…stay tuned. I’m sure my canvases will have a few stories to tell (or at least a few accidental coffee stains).
Let’s make it a colorful year! #momentum
