In 2025, I’ve made a bold decision to give my art the space to breathe, grow, and evolve in exciting new directions. To honor this commitment, I’ve enrolled in an art practice course—but let me clarify, it’s not one of those "here’s-how-to-paint-like-me" courses. I wouldn’t go near those! This course is designed to ignite creativity, spark new ideas, and inspire exploration. It’s about finding your own voice, not mimicking someone else’s.The course—#Momentum, led by Louise Fletcher—is exactly the kind of experience I’ve been searching for. It’s filled with tasks and moments of inspiration that encourage participants to experiment, push boundaries, and uncover what truly excites them in their art practice. This isn’t about watching a tutor paint and then trying to replicate their style. It’s about diving into the unknown, making discoveries, and embracing the joy of creation.
I’ve been on a different kind of course before—the kind where the tutor shares their work and the students strive to recreate it as closely as possible. While I followed the instructions and even infused my own materials and abstracted approach, it left me feeling uninspired, and if I'm honest, irritated. However, what I really did gain from that experience was I do not want to be a sheep, I'm to rebelious for that, and it wasn’t any new technique, but a renewed determination to forge my own path, fueled by the realization of what I didn’t want to do!
What I appreciate about #Momentum is Louise Fletcher’s teaching style. She’s not just an artist I admire; she’s someone who fosters individuality and growth. Her approach creates space for each participant to develop their own unique style and follow their own creative journey. I have been watching her evolve as an artist and a teacher and it has been inspiring, and I’m excited to loosely follow this course along and see where it takes me. Although I already know I'm bound to go 'off piste' sometimes, you can't fight nature!
This year, I’m diving deep into experimentation, exploration, and the messy, beautiful process of discovery. It’s not about the end result; it’s about the journey, the play, and the learning along the way. Here’s to letting go, trusting the process, and seeing what unfolds in 2025. As a practicing therapist
this is where I would encourage many of my clients to follow as well, just holding 2025 lightly, and see where things go, and don't be to hard or judgemental on yourself.
I’d love to hear from others who are embarking on similar creativity journeys. How are you creating space for your art to evolve? Let’s inspire each other!
On that note, I have plenty of paintings that I would like to move along now to make space for new work to come through. On the right is one example of a small series on 12 inch board, framed and ready to hang. Check out the rest of my available paintings and drop me a message is something takes your fancy. Plus, if you live within a reasonable distance I can always bring a selection to your home so you can see what they look like in your space.
Being surrounded by what you’ve created before can sometimes get in the way of fresh ideas. With that in mind, I’m planning a big studio clear-out. This might take the form of a studio sale or selling on other platforms. Looking ahead, although I don't want to wish the time away, to Somerset Open Studios in early Autumn, where I'll be excited to showcase lots of new work for people to see and—hopefully—decide they’d like to buy and put on their walls.
2025 feels like a year of transformation and growth, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me. Let’s make it a year of bold, creative exploration together
